The beauty of Taiping Lake, the largest, most beautiful and most promising artificial lake in an alpine and gorge region in Anhui, lies in its gorgeous water, marvelous ecology, majestic islands and rare rocks. The scenic area has a total area of 312.9 square kilometers, of which the water area is 88.6 square kilometers,17 times that of Hangzhou West Lake, and the maximum water storage is 2.4 billion cubic meters. Taiping Lake, 60 kilometers long from east to west, 6 kilometers wide from north to south, has a maximum depth of 70 meters in the deepest point, and an average water depth of 40 meters. Its water reaches national top-grade level.
The Lake is divided into four scenic areas: Wushi Scenic Area,Taiping Scenic Area, Golden Island Scenic Area and Houkeng Scenic Area, with main attractions like Watching Fishes in Xishan ,Tea Picking in Pinglong Mountain, Water in Three Gorges , Mini-Guilin Scenery, Crocodile Playing with Water, Mushroom Pine, Eyebrow Peak and Qiaoshan Celestial Cave, and core scenic areas of Bailuzhou Paradise, Golden Island Botanical Garden, and Three Major Islands in the Central Lake District (Peace City, Houkui Island, Longyao Village) and Jinpen Bay Resort.

  • Eponymy

    The Lake was formerly known as “Chencun Reservoir”. It was officially renamed Taiping lake in November 1979 by Anhui Provincial Revolutionary Committee through issuing the Reply to the Renaming of Chencun Reservoir as Taiping Lake after the completion of Chencun Power Station Dam and the water storage “ to be consistent with the geographical name and be conducive to the development of the tourism” as the reservoir area is mainly in the Huangshan District (former Taiping

  • Geological Landforms

    Taiping Lake Scenic Area, with a total area of 312.9 square kilometers and a water area of 88.6 square kilometers, is 17 times that of Hangzhou West Lake and has a maximum water storage of 2.4 billion cubic meters. Its water reaches national top-grade level. Its beautiful scenery is constituted by Bailuzhou, Peace City, Longyao Village, Golden Island, Lingyang Mountain, Taiping Bay and Pinghu Three Gorges. The lake has been granted the titles of the Most Beautiful Place in China, China's Popular Tourist Attraction, National 4A Level Scenic Area, National Major Water Conservancy Scenic Area and National Wetland Park. Taipinghu Town, where Taiping Lake is located, has also been rated as a National Beautiful Town.

  • A Revolution written into the Annals of History
    The Taiping Lake area is an old revolutionary base area in which, from the Red Army period to the founding of New China, the Chinese Communist Party had been actively and dauntlessly fighting for the founding of the People's Republic of China and written down a legendary chapter in the revolutionary history.

    In the spring of 1939, Zhou Enlai, the vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, visited south Anhui Province to inspect the work of the New Fourth Army on behalf of the Party Central Committee, the news of which was known by the Kuomintang and he was pursued and hunted closely. At Sanmen Village Xinming Township in Taiping Lake, Zhou Enlai was concealed in the home of a tea merchant Liu Jingzhi and thus escaped the hunt. Then, Zhou Enlai, hiding in a bamboo tea basket on a bamboo raft for tea transportation arranged by Liu Jingzhi , was safely sent back.
  • Richly Endowed with Natural Resources
    Taiping Lake is the main producing area of “Mount Huangshan Maofeng Green Tea” and “Taiping Houkui Green Tea”. The main production area of “Taiping Houkui Green Tea” is located in Houkeng, Hougang and Yanjia in Sanmen Village, Xinming Township, Taiping Lake District. The unique natural environment makes famous tea and, as early as in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,Taiping Lake tea became a tribute to the court. Today, Taiping Houkui Green Tea and Mount Huangshan Maofeng Green Tea are special teas for the entertainment of the foreign guests in China.

    Taiping Lake is under the jurisdiction of Taiping Lake Scenic Area Management Committee, and the tourism industry in the scenic spot is mainly operated by Huangshan Taiping Lake Cultural Tourism Co., Ltd., whose business scope covers tourist reception services, scenic spot tickets, passenger transportation, tourism project construction, scenic spot development, water sports, games and activities, real estate and hotel development and operation. The company currently has 60 employees, 4 luxury cruise ships, and 7 speedboats (the scenic area has a total of 33 cruise ships and 53 speed boats, which can accommodate 2250 passengers).

    Taiping Lake has successfully hosted Huangshan Taiping Lake Triathlon International Classic Event, National Open Water Swimming Series (Huangshan Taipinghu Station), National Motorboat Championship, National City Club Fishing Tour (Anhui Taipinghu Station), World Overseas Chinese Dragon Boat Race, China's first Youth String Music Festival, China's Huangshan Taiping Lake International Sport Walking Festival, 34th International Miss Intercontinental , National Fishing Competition (Taiping Lake Station) and other events.

    It also holds Greenland Crouching Tiger Golf Club Member Cup, sailing events and etc.
  • Location and Transportation
    Taiping Lake Scenic Area, located in the northwest of Huangshan District of Huangshan City and embraced by Mount Huangshan and Jiuhua Mountain, is an important part of Anhui's tourism development strategy of “Two Mountains and One Lake” (Mount Huang, Jiuhua Mountain and Taiping Lake). It is 2.5 hours drive from Hefei Airport, about 1 hour's drive both from Huangshan Airport and Jiuhua Airport, 2-hours' drive from Nanjing, Hefei and Wuhu Railway Stations and 1 hour's drive to Huangshan and Tongling Railway Stations.

    The Hefei-Tongling-Huangshan Highway passing through the Taiping Lake Scenic Area has entrances and exits in Taipinghu Town. Besides, 103 provincial highway along the south bank of Taiping Lake is connected to Gantang Town, Huangshan District. The inner roads of Taiping Lake mainly include 103 provincial highway on the south bank and 322 provincial highways on the east with a width of 10 meters. 042 county highway on the north bank of the Lake connects Taipinghu Town, with Yongfeng Township and Xinming Township. The construction of the highway around Taiping Lake will go from west to east through the Taling Peninsula, Lingyang Mountain, Shaoling and Citian Village and become a circular tourism road.
  • Historical Development
    Taiping Lake, mainly used for flood control, irrigation and power generation, also supports aquaculture and shipping. Originally an artificial large reservoir on the upper stream of Qingyi River, it was called Chencun Reservoir. It became well-known for its beautiful and tranquil scenery and thus a popular tourist destination.

    In November 1979, "Chen Village Reservoir" was renamed as Taiping Lake by Anhui Provincial Revolutionary Committee by the issuance of the "Reply to the Renaming of Chen Village Reservoir as Taiping Lake" .

    In June 2000, the provincial leaders proposed during the investigation in Taiping Lake the principle of "focusing on the two mountains and one lake to promote tourism throughout the province and boost Anhui economy", and Taiping Lake was elevated to an important strategic position equal to that of the two mountains (Mount Huangshan and Jiuhua Mountain).

    Today, Taiping Lake, as the leading tourist destination in Huangshan District, has been highly valued by the district government and the tourism authorities. The district committee and district government put forward that the lines along Mount Huangshan and Taiping Lake as centers of tourism industries form two tourism economic belts around the mountain and the lake, which can generate five major tourism products, namely "Around-the-Mountain Tour ", "Around-the-Lake Tour ", "Along-the-Road Tour ", "Along-the-Water Tour" and "City Tour".
Major Honors
1. In August 1987, Taiping Lake was listed in the first batch of provincial scenic areas by the People's Government of Anhui Province;
2. In 1992, the natural forest vegetation in Taiping Lake Scenic Area was listed as National Forest Park;
3. In 1996, it was listed as the first Tourism-based Ecological Demonstration Pilot in China by the National Environmental Protection Agency;
4. On November 8, 2001, Taiping Lake Scenic Area was put in the first batch of "National Water Conservancy Scenic Area" by the review committee of water conservancy scenic area of China's Ministry of Water Resources.
5. In 2005, it was rated as the "Most Beautiful Place in China" and the "Civilized Scenic Area in Anhui Province";
6. In November 2006, Taiping Lake Scenic Area was granted the title of National AAAA-Level Tourist Area.
7. In April 2010, Taipinghu Town was rated as “National Environmentally Beautiful Township” and “National Ecological Village” by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
8. On December 31, 2014, the State Forestry Administration approved the acceptance of the Taiping Lake Pilot. Taiping Lake become an official "National Wetland Park", the first national wetland park in Anhui Province that passed the pilot acceptance.
  • Operation
    In 2016, the company has reaped an operating income of 20.4276 million yuan, received 1.0859 million people, and generated a total revenue of 82.9957 million yuan in the scenic area.

    In 2017, the company has achieved an operating income of 20.2043 million yuan, received 1.072 million tourists, and created a total revenue of 75.0936 million yuan in the scenic area.

    By September, 2018, the company has reached an operating income of 16.6042 million yuan, received 869,000 tourists and made a total revenue of 55.292 million yuan in the scenic area. Both the number of tourists received and the operating income of this year's Golden Week during the National Day holiday created an unprecedented new high with a significant increase over that of 2017.
  • Cultural heritage
    On the banks of Taiping Lake were found the dinosaur egg fossils from the Cretaceous Period 75 million years ago, and the ruins of the Zhongjiashan( in Taiping Town) from the Neolithic Age; Hidden in the bottom of the lake is a large number of cultural relics like the thousands' year old ancient city -Guangyang City and the Sanli Qinhuai River- Longmen Street. The legend that Dou Ziming of the Han Dynasty cultivated himself and a white fish to celestial beings in Lingyang Mountain inspired Li Bai, a great poet, to compose the poem " When Azalea blossoms in late spring, it becomes too late for fishing in Lingyang ". Later generations followed the saying that "Qu Yuan was exiled to Lingyang" and visited here. Tang poets Li Bai, Luo Yin, Du Xunhe and others left behind their traces, while the two Chinese characters "Xiu Yin" inscribed on the lakeside stone by the scholar Zhu Xi of Southern Song Dynasty inspired the literary giant Su Xuelin, who was equally famous as Bing Xin and Lin Huiyin during the May Fourth Period. It is here a story of Premier Zhou with a lakeside enlightened gentleman is much told.

During the construction of Taiping Lake in 1994 were found Dinosaur egg fossils, which were verified by the archaeological experts to be anatosaurus dinosaur eggs from the Cretaceous period 75 million years ago. 2. In the Zhongjiashan area on the south bank of Taiping Lake were also discovered a site of the late Neolithic period to the Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty-the Mound Tombs, where a large number of inscribed pottery pieces, knives, arrowheads,and other stone tools as well as bronzes were unearthed. 3. Lingyang Mountain is a place where Dou Ziming become an immortal in the legend story.
